Start with the same trip

Use the same dates, number of travellers and planned distance for both options. A lower total can be misleading if it leaves out a traveller, a room or part of the trip.

Check each quote before comparing the totals.
CheckUse in your comparison
TravellersThe whole group, including every required room and enough vehicle seats.
Rental periodThe days and charges in each supplier’s quote.
Overnight staysEvery campsite or hotel night for the group.
Included costsTaxes and required extras, counted once.
CurrencyOne currency for every amount.

Keep rental days separate from overnight stays. A seven-day rental may have six nights of accommodation. Use the periods in your actual bookings rather than assuming they are identical. If pickup times, flight schedules or supplier billing make the two rentals different lengths, calculate each rental total separately.

Put every amount in one currency. If you convert a quote, record the exchange rate and date you used. The browser planner uses ISK. Convert any foreign-currency quotes to ISK before entering them, using a recorded exchange rate and date.

What to include in each option

Use the price and inclusions in your own supplier quotes.

RentalVehicle price for the full rental periodCar price for the full rental period
Overnight staysCampsite fees for the group, vehicle and any extrasAll rooms and nights, including any additional charges

Check taxes, mileage or road-use charges, airport transfers, parking and cleaning charges in the supplier terms. Include anything that applies to your booking; do not add an item twice if it is already in the quoted total.

For fuel, use distance in km × litres per 100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre. The paid browser planner lets you replace each option’s fuel allowance with a whole-trip total. Use the relevant fuel and consumption for each vehicle.

A contingency allowance is extra budget, not a prediction. Enter 10% as a percentage, not the number 10. Apply the same approach to both options and compare the results before and after the allowance.

A seven-day fictional example

These invented figures explain the arithmetic. They are not current Iceland rental, campsite or hotel prices.

Campervan

7 rental days × 30,000 ISK
6 nights × 7,000 ISK for the group

252,000 ISK

Car + hotel

7 rental days × 12,000 ISK
6 nights × 26,000 ISK for all rooms

240,000 ISK

Here, car plus hotel is 12,000 ISK lower for rental and overnight costs. This is not a full-trip comparison yet: fuel, insurance, food and other differences could change the result.

Compare the difference, not just the biggest price

If the campervan rental is more expensive, compare that premium with the accommodation cost it replaces. In the example, the camper costs 126,000 ISK more to rent, while the overnight costs are 114,000 ISK lower. The net difference is 12,000 ISK.

Costs that are exactly the same for both options do not change which is cheaper, but they still belong in your overall trip budget. Costs that differ—such as meals, vehicle extras or a different travel distance—can change the comparison.

A cheaper estimate is only one part of the decision. Check sleeping capacity, comfort, availability and the rental agreement separately. A spreadsheet cannot confirm that a vehicle is suitable for your intended roads or that a campsite is open on your dates.

Check again before you book

  • Refresh expired quotes and compare the cancellation and payment terms.
  • Confirm all travellers, rooms, dates, taxes and relevant extras are included.
  • Check current road and weather information with Iceland’s road information service and SafeTravel.
  • Use supplier confirmation for vehicle permissions, campsite availability and what your booking includes.

Our browser planner helps you refine the budget with your quotes, save three plans in this browser and print a summary. The optional spreadsheet has a separate booking-payment tracker. It is a planning aid, not a booking service or a guarantee of prices or savings.
